Grand Theft Auto VI’s Soundtrack Debuts With Travis Scott, Keith Richards, and Four More Artists
The first six songs from Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album are out. Rockstar Games and Atlantic Records announced the project Thursday, September 17, in Paris, ahead of the game’s November 19 release.
The full album will hold 34 original tracks when it lands, all timed to the same day as the game. Only six songs are public right now. The other 28 stay unnamed.
Who made the cut
Travis Scott leads the reveal with “RHYNO,” produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of Daft Punk. Rockstar was quick to say this is not a Daft Punk reunion. Homem-Christo worked on the track alone.
Keith Richards is on the list too, covering Jimmy Reed’s blues standard “Bright Lights, Big City.” He’s 82, the oldest name on the tracklist by a wide margin.
The rest of the batch: Yung Lean’s “That’s It” (featuring Future and Metro Boomin), “Sexy Magic” from CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso with PinkPantheress, Fred again.., and Etienne de Crecy, Morgan Wallen’s “Last Thing You Need,” and Rauw Alejandro’s “Macacoa 2000.”
What Rockstar says it sounds like
Rockstar describes the album as “34 original tracks that capture the electric energy of Vice City and Leonida, with artists from a genre-defying roster.” Hip-hop, electronic, pop, country, Latin, and rock all sit on the same tracklist.
GTA has always sold itself partly through its radio stations, real songs stitched into a fake world. This reveal reads like that idea scaled up into an actual commercial album.
The wait has a price tag
Preorders opened the same day. A CD runs $19.98, standard vinyl is $49.98, and the limited-edition vinyl, pressed in transparent magenta with blue liquid sealed inside the disc, is $124.98. That limited edition already sold out. Standard vinyl and CD are still available to preorder.
Rockstar also put out a 26 minute preview on Netflix in late August. The YouTube upload has pulled in close to 28 million views. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, called early preorder numbers exceptional back in August.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be the first mainline entry in the series since Grand Theft Auto V, which came out more than 13 years ago.
