Alex Eala Gets To Work At Arthur Ashe Stadium
Alex Eala has landed in New York for her US Open campaign. She started training at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the tournament’s main court and the largest tennis stadium in the world. The main draw opens August 30.
Sharing The Court With A Former Top Three
The US Open shared footage of Eala’s training session. Part of it showed her hitting with Grigor Dimitrov, a former ATP world No. 3 and Masters 1000 champion. She has never played a match on Arthur Ashe before this tournament. Another clip, posted the same weekend, showed her working with coach Joan Bosch on court.
A Full Summer Behind Her
Eala flew to New York after a stretch on the North American hardcourt swing. She won her first WTA Tour-level title at the Mubadala DC Open, then reached the fourth round at the Canadian Open before a third-round loss at the Cincinnati Open. She is currently ranked world No. 20 and is projected to move to a new career high, possibly No. 18, when rankings update Monday.
This will be Eala’s second main-draw appearance at Flushing Meadows. Last year, she became the first Filipino player in the Open Era to win a singles main draw match at a major.
Her Calendar Doesn’t Stop At Singles
Eala is also entering mixed doubles this year, pairing with Felix Auger-Aliassime, currently ATP No. 4. Their first match is scheduled for August 25 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Before the singles draw begins, Eala faces Iva Jovic in the “Stars of the Open” exhibition match on August 27. Reports differ on Jovic’s exact ranking, placing her at either world No. 14 or world No. 16.
