The Season Isn’t Pausing For Anyone

PAGASA is expecting four typhoons this August alone. Two have already passed through, Luis and Maymay, and the agency says two more are on the way. As of the latest bulletin, a low pressure area is sitting 1,160 kilometers east of Northern Luzon while the southwest monsoon keeps dumping rain on Luzon and Visayas. Nothing is dominating headlines right now, which just means the next one is still forming.

Most people in the Philippines know the drill by instinct. Bring the plants in, charge the power bank, wait it out. But the difference between a rough afternoon and a genuine emergency usually comes down to a few decisions made before the wind gets loud.

Before It Arrives

A proper kit means water at three liters per person per day, non-perishable food, medicine, a flashlight, a battery powered radio, and your important documents sealed in something waterproof. Build it once, keep it by the door, forget about it until you need it.

Around the house, latch every window and sliding door tightly so wind cannot force them open, and bring in anything sitting outside that could turn into a projectile once the gusts start. If your area floods often, lift what you can off the ground now, not when the water is already at your ankles.

While It’s Happening

Stay indoors and stay away from windows and glass doors. Keep the radio or your phone on for updates from PAGASA, your LGU, or your barangay, and treat those as the only sources worth trusting. Unverified posts move faster than facts during a storm, and acting on the wrong one can cost you time you do not have.

If an evacuation order comes through, that is not the moment to weigh your options. Turn off the electricity, shut the gas tank, lock the doors, and go. Everyone in the house should already know the meeting point and the exit route before that call ever has to be made.

After The Water Goes Down

Confirm it is actually safe before stepping outside. Once it is, check on the people around you first, then check the damage. Document what you find before you start cleaning up, especially if any of it is going toward an insurance claim later.

Run through this every time the forecast turns. This August alone, it already has, twice.
