The First Trailer for Balaraw: Blood Island Just Landed
Netflix released the first trailer for Balaraw: Blood Island this week. It’s the streamer’s first Filipino series built for its global slate, and it’s a horror story pulled straight from home ground.
Where the story starts
Balaraw: Blood Island follows Sabina, played by Janine Gutierrez, years after her mother disappears. A mysterious clue leads her to an uncharted island, where she finds secrets buried inside her own family. Rae Red directs, the filmmaker behind The Woman and The Gun, Luna, and Birdshot, and a past winner of the Gawad Urian Award with recognition at QCinema International Film Festival.
What the trailer shows
The clip opens with Sabina on a boat headed for the island. A confrontation between passengers turns violent, and Sabina gets hurt trying to step in. It ends with a dying boatman pointing toward the water.
Who’s in it
Gutierrez leads alongside Charlie Dizon, Agot Isidro, and Ronnie Lazaro. She’s said the story is really about family underneath the scares: “The world of ‘Balaraw’ is so big but at the heart of it, I think it’s about the relationship of Sabina, my character, with her mother, Rebecca.”
Why this one’s different
Balaraw: Blood Island is produced by Epic Media Ph. It’s the first Filipino series built specifically for Netflix’s global audience, rather than a local title picked up after release. It premieres September 24, 2026.
