Roblox Will Let Anyone Build a Game With One Sentence

July 25, 2026 2 Min Read

Roblox announced a new feature called Build on Thursday, July 16. It lets anyone design a game from their phone using nothing but a text prompt. Type something like “a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest,” and Build generates a working first version. Gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, visual style, sound. All of it, before a user writes a single line of code.

Roblox says Build runs on a mix of open-source and proprietary models. Users can tweak whatever the AI generates and share it with friends. Google, Microsoft, and Tencent have already released similar tools, so Roblox is catching up to a trend, not starting one.

The Same Fear, Just Louder

Lowering the barrier to entry sounds good until you ask who else it lets in. Developers have raised the obvious concern: easier creation means more competition, and not just from other people. Creators now compete with AI output that can be produced far faster than anything built by hand.

That anxiety already shows up in the numbers. This year’s Game Developer Conference State of the Game Industry survey found that 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry. Build did not create that sentiment. It walked into a room where the sentiment was already waiting.

Retention Over Volume

Roblox’s answer is to rank AI-generated games the same way it ranks everything else: by player retention. A game nobody plays will not surface on the homepage, regardless of how it was made. “Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn’t include AI slop,” the company said in its announcement.

Build enters public alpha on July 28. It starts small: age-verified users in New Zealand, ages 9 and up. Users 16 and older will be able to publish their creations to a global audience. A free tier will sit next to paid options.

Roblox is also building AI agents to help creators with playtesting and analytics, part of a wider push that includes an AI model for 3D assets and an AI assistant for the build process itself. The pitch is speed for everyone. The test will be whether speed and quality can actually coexist on the same platform.
