Lanterns Took Seven Years and Four Rewrites.
DC has spent the last few years trying to win back trust after one reboot too many. Lanterns is the first live-action series developed from the ground up under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s watch as DC Studios’ co-chairs. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart. Neither the casting nor the tone reads like a typical superhero launch.
Seven Years, Four Takes
Getting here took almost seven years and four different versions of the show. Greg Berlanti had been developing his own Green Lantern series since 2019, originally meant to span decades and cover multiple Lanterns. HBO Max scrapped that version in January 2023 and handed the project to Gunn and Safran instead. Usually a restart like that is a bad sign. This one just looks like DC finally waiting until the idea was right.
Craft Over Spectacle
The show follows John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, the veteran, as they investigate a murder in the American heartland that turns out to have cosmic ties. Showrunner Chris Mundy has called it a relationship story between the two leads first, told across eight episodes. The look is gritty, closer to True Detective than to a typical superhero team-up. Mundy has described the effects work as sitting on the medium to low side, on purpose. The crew shot as much as they could practically, aiming for something grounded instead of glossy.
The Quiet Signal
The timing matters too. 2025’s Superman gave the DCU real momentum. This summer’s Supergirl didn’t. Lanterns landing in the middle of that is a test of whether restraint can hold an audience the way spectacle usually does. Early reviews have been kind, calling it the Green Lantern project DC fans deserve. HBO ordered a second season back in May, months before the first season even premiered.
There wasn’t a viral trailer moment or a meme driving people to watch. What got Lanterns here was a showrunner who came from prestige TV, actors chosen for range over star power, and a studio that let the thing take the time it needed.
