Crazy Rich Asians Returns as an HBO Series
HBO Max has ordered a Crazy Rich Asians series. The announcement came on October 8, 2026. It is a sequel to the 2018 film, and production starts in 2027.
The Original Cast Returns
Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng are returning. Chieng is expected to play Eddie Cheng, Nick’s cousin from Hong Kong. No other cast members have been announced.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, is the showrunner and an executive producer. Kevin Kwan, Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also executive producers. The series is an hour-long format.
Lim called the project a “CRAZY RICH family reunion.” Chu said the film changed his life eight years ago.
More Time With the Story
The series has eight episodes. Lim said that gives the team room to explore the characters and worlds of Kwan’s books.
The 2018 film earned about $239 million at the box office on a $30 million budget. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
The series picks up after the events of the film.
A Long Road to the Screen
HBO’s chief said in June 2024 that a series was in development. A development room opened under Lim in early 2025. Plans for a sequel film had stalled several times before that.
In 2025, Chu said scripts were ready. He also said the series cannot follow Kwan’s books one for one, because the film changed its characters so much. The books will serve as inspiration.
Kwan published Crazy Rich Asians in 2013, China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017. Reports differ on how much of the later books the series will use. Some coverage says it draws on the second and third novels, while other coverage says that is not yet clear. No premiere date has been set.
