Spotify Is Adding a Label for AI-Generated Artists

Spotify announced on Tuesday, August 11, that it will begin flagging AI-generated artist profiles with a new badge called AI Persona. The badge starts appearing in mid-September.

What the Badge Actually Flags

The AI Persona badge marks an artist’s public identity, not how a song was produced. Spotify said the label is meant to tell listeners when an artist’s identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person. Music made by a human artist who used AI tools during production stays outside this label. That information lives instead in Spotify’s separate AI Credits and SongDNA features, both launched earlier this year.

How an Artist Gets Flagged

Starting Tuesday, artists can self-disclose an AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists. Spotify said it will not rely on disclosure alone. Human reviewers and AI investigative tools will also review profiles, and Spotify plans an appeals process for accounts that believe they were flagged incorrectly. The badge will note whether an artist self-disclosed or whether Spotify made the determination itself.

Where It Shows Up, and What It Changes

Once live, the badge appears on artist profile banners and About sections, in Search results, and on track rows within playlists. Rollout begins with artists who have already met defined audience thresholds, covering most profiles that listeners actually visit. By default, Spotify excludes AI Persona profiles from editorial and algorithmic recommendations entirely, and their music will not surface in personalized recommendations either, unless the listener already follows that artist.

Part of a Bigger Push

Spotify has framed the badge as one piece of a broader Artist Identity and Trust effort that has included Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, and Artist Profile Protection, all introduced this year. In July, the RIAA, IFPI, the American Association of Independent Music, and other industry groups proposed two separate tags, “AI-generated” and “AI-assisted,” for labeling how songs are made.

A Problem Already Visible Elsewhere

Deezer, which says it was the first streaming platform to detect and tag AI music at the platform level, reported that fully AI-generated tracks made up more than half of its daily uploads for the first time in June, close to 90,000 a day, up from 44 percent in April. The company has said up to 85 percent of streams on fully AI-generated tracks in 2025 were fraudulent, and that it strips those streams from royalty payouts.
