Alex Eala Beats Osaka, Reaches First WTA 500 Final

Alex Eala beat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open, the first time the two had ever played each other. Osaka came into the match as the tournament’s third seed.

Osaka’s serve broke down under pressure. She won barely more than half her service points, and Eala converted four of twelve break chances to close out the match in a little over an hour.

The Week That Got Her Here

Osaka was the third seeded player Eala took down that week in Washington. She had already eliminated defending champion Leylah Fernandez and No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina to reach the semifinal.

This is the biggest final of her career, her first at the WTA 500 level and her first on a hard court, a year after finishing runner-up at the 2025 Eastbourne Open.

The Pegula Rematch

Waiting for her is world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s top seed, who reached the final by beating Diana Shnaider in straight sets. The two have met once before, in the 2025 Miami Open semifinals, where Pegula won a tight three-set battle that ended what had been a breakout run for Eala at the time.

History in Reach

A win over Pegula would make Eala the first Filipina to claim a WTA singles title. The final was pushed back after rain hit Washington, with play rescheduled at Rock Creek Park’s Stadium Court.
