Alex Eala on Track for No. 17 Seed at US Open
Alex Eala is one spot away from the best seeding of her career.
The 21-year-old is on track to enter the US Open women’s singles draw as the No. 17 seed, a jump made possible after world No. 15 Victoria Mboko withdrew from the main draw because of injury. Eala currently sits at world No. 18, a career high.
If the seed holds, it would be the highest of Eala’s Grand Slam career, topping the No. 29 seed she carried into Wimbledon this past July.
The Season That Built the Case
The Wimbledon run backs up the case for No. 17. Eala reached the fourth round, beating Renata Zarazua, Maya Joint, and defending champion Iga Swiatek along the way, the deepest Grand Slam run by a Filipina player in the Open era.
A month earlier, she won her first WTA title. Eala beat Jessica Pegula in the final of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington.
Doubles Duty Before the Draw
Eala is also playing mixed doubles at this year’s US Open, partnering Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime against Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils.
The official seeding for the tournament hasn’t been released yet. The full women’s singles draw ceremony is set for Thursday, August 27. Should the projected bracket hold, Eala is expected to avoid the top 16 seeds until at least the third round. The US Open main draw runs from August 30 to September 13.
