3 Idiots Is Getting A Sequel

3 Idiots came out in 2009. Almost 20 years later, Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed a sequel is in the works. Speaking to ANI earlier this month, Hirani said the original cast will return and the story is still being written.

A Different Story, Not A Rewind

Hirani has been clear that this isn’t a trip back to the classroom. The follow up won’t revisit the characters’ college years and will instead explore what has happened in their lives roughly two decades after the events of the first film. Interestingly, the sequel wasn’t the plan from the start. Hirani and his team had been developing a completely different story before realizing it could work as a continuation of the 3 Idiots characters instead.

Who’s Expected Back

If the film moves forward, Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi are expected to return as Rancho, Farhan, and Raju. Hirani hasn’t officially announced the project yet. But confirming a script exists is already a big deal, given how tied 3 Idiots is to this exact cast.

The 20 Year Gap Is Now Confirmed

Earlier reports floated different numbers, including a roughly 10 year jump Khan referenced in an interview months ago. Hirani’s own comments to ANI settle it: the story picks up 20 years after the first film.

Not Everyone Is Convinced

Not every original cast member is sold on the idea. Madhavan has voiced skepticism about revisiting the franchise, questioning what a meaningful story would even look like for characters who are now much older than they were in 2009.

There’s no title, no release date, and no official greenlight yet. Just a script in progress and a cast that seems mostly game.
