James Harden is staying in Cleveland.
The 11-time All-Star agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract with the Cavaliers, his agents at Equity Sports told ESPN on Thursday. The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and a 15 percent trade kicker, and it is fully guaranteed, according to HoopsHype.
Harden declined a $42.3 million player option this past summer to pursue a longer-term deal. Negotiations took close to two months while the Cavaliers restructured their books, a process that included sending Dennis Schroder to the Charlotte Hornets and finalizing a five-team sign-and-trade for Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson, per CBS Sports. Watson’s four-year, $88 million agreement cleared the space Cleveland needed to get Harden’s new deal done.
Harden, who turns 37 on Aug. 26, returns to a roster he joined at last season’s trade deadline, when the Cavaliers acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Darius Garland. In 26 regular season games with Cleveland, he averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds, helping the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals.
By the time this contract is complete, Harden’s career earnings are set to pass the $500 million mark, a threshold only a handful of players in league history have reached, according to ESPN.
The Cavaliers are Harden’s sixth team since he entered the league in 2009, following stops with the Thunder, Rockets, Nets, 76ers and Clippers.
