Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets a New PH Box Office Bar

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in Philippine cinemas on Wednesday, July 29, and immediately reset the numbers local moviegoers use as benchmarks. According to distributor Columbia Pictures, the film earned P95,930,965 on its first day in theaters, a figure that instantly rewrote several records at once.

The Numbers Behind the Swing

That single day made Brand New Day the biggest opening day Sony Pictures has ever had in the Philippines, and the biggest post pandemic opening day the local box office has recorded. It also landed as the third-biggest opening day in Philippine box office history overall, trailing only Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War. For the Spider-Man franchise specifically, it is the biggest opening day the character has ever had in the country.

A Franchise Still Building Momentum

Brand New Day is the fourth Spider-Man film in the Marvel series led by Tom Holland, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who takes over from Jon Watts. The story picks up four years after No Way Home, where a spell erased Peter Parker from the memory of everyone who knew him. Peter is now isolated, working as Spider-Man full time, when a mysterious entity begins causing changes to his health and powers.

Beating Its Own History

The opening day gross also surpassed the debuts of Inside Out 2 and Hello, Love, Again, which had held the post pandemic record until now. Brand New Day did this without any lift from premium IMAX pricing, since those screens were still occupied by The Odyssey. Turnout was strong nationally, with solid numbers reported across Manila, Cebu, and Davao.

What Comes Next

With this kind of start, industry watchers see an opening weekend north of half a billion pesos as within reach, which would put Brand New Day on track to become the highest-grossing release of the year in the Philippines. That is still a projection, not a confirmed figure.
