Alex Eala beat defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek in the third round on Saturday. The final score was 7-6(9), 6-2. The 29th seed needed 84 minutes to close out the first set. She had built a 5-3 lead with a set point in hand, then watched it slip away. In the tiebreak, she led 5-2 before Swiatek reeled off four straight points to reach a set point of her own. Eala saved it, then went on to reach four set points of her own before closing out the tiebreak 11-9.

Four Straight Games, Then a Fight to Finish

Eala carried her momentum into the second set, winning four games in a row before Swiatek answered with two of her own. The match came down to the eighth game, where Eala outlasted her opponent through multiple deuces to close it out.

A Second Win Over a Familiar Opponent

The result marked Eala’s second career win over Swiatek and her seventh over a top 10 WTA player. Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, finished the match with 44 unforced errors and had squandered two set point advantages during the first set tiebreak alone.

Eala thanked the crowd that packed Centre Court for the atmosphere they brought, calling it one of the biggest matches of her life on what she described as her dream court. On facing Swiatek specifically, she said she could hardly put the moment into words, and spoke warmly about sharing Centre Court with a player she called phenomenal.

The Record Still Ahead

Eala will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16. Two rounds earlier, she had already become the first Filipina to reach the third round of a Grand Slam. A deep run from here would put her within reach of a rarer mark. The Philippines has not had a player in a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal since Felicisimo Ampon at the 1953 French Open.
