The Philippines’ Night Shift Runs On Burgers, Data Shows
Between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., burgers made up 25.3% of all foodpanda orders placed nationwide from January to June 2026, according to data the company released this month. Roughly one in every four late-night orders on the platform was for a burger. The pattern held across both Metro Manila and provincial cities, the company said.
Built For A Workforce That Never Clocks Out
The hours match the country’s night shift economy. The IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines said the IT-BPM industry closed 2025 with 1.9 million workers and $40 billion in revenue. About 60% of that workforce works night shifts to serve clients in Western time zones. For BPO agents, freelancers, and virtual assistants on those schedules, a lunch break can land at 1 a.m.
The Science Behind The Craving
There may be a biological reason burgers win at that hour. foodpanda cited a University of Chicago study showing that sleep restriction can increase preference for filling, energy-rich foods. That lines up with foodpanda’s after-hours numbers: heavy, familiar meals outperform lighter options once the clock passes 11 p.m.
Familiar Beats Fancy After Midnight
“Late-night ordering has become an increasingly important dining occasion for many Filipinos,” said Patricia Jacinto, foodpanda Philippines’ growth and marketing director. “While we offer thousands of food choices on the app, burgers continue to stand out as the top pick after 11 PM. The consistency of this trend across the country shows how customers value meals that are familiar, satisfying, and convenient, whether they’re working late, studying, or simply winding down for the day.”
