GTA VI’s Gamescom Reveal Just Broke the Internet

September 1, 2026 2 Min Read

Rockstar Games gave fans the longest look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27, and platforms across the internet spent the next few hours proving they were not ready for it.

The reveal, twice

The “Extended Look,” a 26-minute gameplay presentation, premiered exclusively on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET. Rockstar held it there for six hours before releasing the same footage on its YouTube channel and the official GTA VI website at 9 p.m. ET that same day. Fans without Netflix had two options: wait, or watch someone else’s reaction on Twitch. Most people didn’t wait.

Streams buckled almost immediately

Twitch felt it first. About an hour after the Netflix premiere, Twitch’s status page confirmed a major outage across web, chat, and video, with Downdetector logging more than 17,000 problem reports at the peak. Two of the platform’s biggest channels, run by Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed, briefly went dark for viewers trying to catch their reactions. Broadcasting tools stayed operational throughout, so streamers could still go live even while much of the audience could not load the page.

Netflix had its own stumble. Downdetector logged over 3,000 reports as subscribers tried to load the special, and some described the app freezing mid-playback. None of that kept the numbers down: Netflix’s web traffic jumped 125 percent compared with a typical Thursday, mobile usage climbed near 50 percent, and the Extended Look shot to No. 1 on Netflix’s own movie chart, per Sensor Tower data shared with Forbes.

The scale, once it settled

Once the video reached YouTube, the growth kept going. Two days after release, the Extended Look had racked up more than 14 million YouTube views. Streams Charts tracked a combined peak of nearly 4 million viewers watching official and fan commentary streams of the reveal at once. Rockstar’s own website saw a 172 percent jump in global traffic once the footage went live, a figure confirmed independently across several outlets tracking the same Streams Charts data.

What’s actually launching

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, following Jason and Lucia through the fictional state of Leonida. Preorders had already passed 4.5 million copies, worth roughly $446 million, before the Extended Look even aired. A couple of outlets citing Sensor Tower’s numbers put it closer to 4.6 million. Either way, treat that as a pre-reveal snapshot, not a current count.

Twitch went down for an hour. Netflix wobbled. And the game itself is still three months away.
