Tickets Are Now Live for DreamWorks’ “Forgotten Island”
Tickets for DreamWorks Animation’s “Forgotten Island” are officially on sale, ahead of its Philippine release on September 23. The film opens in the United States two days later, on September 25.
The Story
Jo (voiced by H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano) are best friends since grade school, about to graduate high school and head down separate paths. On their last night together, they find a portal that pulls them into Nakali, a mythical island drawn from the folklore their families grew up telling them. Finding a way home may cost them the memories of the friendship that got them there in the first place.
Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado wrote and directed the film. Mark Swift produced it, the same team behind “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” Universal Pictures is distributing.
Who’s Behind the Voices
Lea Salonga plays the Manananggal, the island’s most feared creature. Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, and Amielynn Abellera fill out the rest of the cast. Mercado is Filipino American, and Crawford’s wife and her family are Filipino, something both directors point to when explaining why the film leans on bayanihan as much as it does on friendship.
Before the Tickets Went Up
The film’s stars and filmmakers spent time in Manila first. Soberano, H.E.R., Crawford, and Mercado headlined the “Tayo Na, Philippines!” tour, meeting fans at SM Mall of Asia on August 25 and holding a special screening at SM Aura in Taguig for children supported by Save the Children. The soundtrack also carries the culture through, with theme songs featuring BINI, SB19, and KATSEYE’s Sophia Laforteza.
It’s Soberano’s first Hollywood co-lead voice role. H.E.R., who is Filipino on her mother’s side, has talked about the film as a way to spotlight that heritage. Swift put it simply: most of what he’s worked on has been a sequel or based on a book. This one wasn’t.
